Case Study for Research in Motion

Company profile

Research In Motion

  • Research In Motion (RIM), a global leader in wireless innovation, revolutionized the mobile industry with the introduction of the BlackBerry® solution in 1999.
  • $19.9 billion in revenue in 2011

Business situation

With over 26 buildings throughout the Waterloo Region, plus Mississauga and Toronto offices, Research In Motion’s facilities team was faced with the challenge of managing large volumes of surplus furniture spread across multiple locations.

McIntyre Group created a resolution for RIM’s problem by proposing a combination of our inventory and warehousing services.  This solution allowed RIM to have a centralized location for all of their surplus assets; making redeployment very hassle free. All assets were barcoded and stored in a web based database utilizing our SnapTracker software.  This industry leading software allows the RIM facilities team to log into a web based customer portal and view all inventory as well as request parts by using a “shopping cart” based ordering system.

In 2011, using McIntyre’s warehousing and inventory services, RIM accumulated a savings of nearly $3 million by utilizing existing stock instead of purchasing new.
